Dan’s Wee Cottage

Dan’s Wee Cottage near Slieve Croob, Dromara, is a traditional styled cottage combined with modern living which accommodates up to 6 people over 2 bedrooms with an en-suite to the master bedroom. The cottage is situated at the foothills of Slieve Croob, 2.5 miles from Dromara Village, 30 minutes from Belfast and Newry, and 25 minutes from Newcastle.

Dan’s Wee Cottage started off as a comment by a friend which quickly gathered momentum. Once planning was passed, the restoration of the cottage began in earnest. Dan was the last of the Hughes family who resided here from 1948 until 2004, and we have tried to be sympathetic to his home whilst creating a modern yet traditional feel to the cottage.

The family moved here from the top of Cratlieve Mountain – which you can see from our large window looking up to the right – and lived here as a family with Dan remaining a bachelor all his life, only married to the land that is situated to the rear of the cottage, which we still farm today.

I have grown up and been here all my life, and my wife Lorraine and I have been lucky enough to live here from September 2003 along with our three daughters Orláigh, Shannon and Líle-Róis in the shadows of the scenic (and often hypnotic) setting of Slieve Croob, which can be seen from the kitchen window in all its splendour.

The cottage boasts all mod cons with washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, flat screen TV, fridge freezer, multi-fuel stove, walk-in shower and free-standing bath. We are closely situated to Legananny Dolmen, Finnis Souterrain, Windy Gap Viewpoint, Slieve Croob Mountain Walk and Drumkeeragh Forest Walk, and only 15 minutes from Castlewellan Forest Park.

Our favourite thing about Dan’s is that it’s alive again and open and ready to welcome visitors to enjoy their stay and be part of the journey that we have been on so far.

When visitors come to the cottage, they will become steeped in the history of Dan’s Wee Cottage which dates back to the early 1800’s but boasts all the modern-day attributes of a new house. You can feel that you are miles and miles away from anywhere but at the same time you have everything you need at hand.
