Margaret’s Cottage is one of those little gems, hidden away in the village of Ardglass, on the Mourne Coastal route and overlooking the rugged County Down coastline.

The building gets its name from the next-door Margaret’s Cottage, a 15th century tower house and one of the six castles in village of Ardglass.

Dating back to the 1700s, Margaret’s Cottage has always had a maritime history and has been the ballast office, lighthouse-keepers’ cottage and the base for the local coastguards and their families.

In 2015 we swapped our busy life in Northumberland to move back home to County Down and begin the work of transforming Margaret’s Cottage into a beautiful place for guests to stay.

Together, my daughter and I created a luxury B&B with a double/king room and one twin/double room and a small double, ideal for one, each with its own unique character and each accompanied by a beautiful ensuite or private bathroom.

Throughout the house you’ll find many references to the sea, our own local and long family history and the heritage of the building. Our own family dates back seven generations in this part of Ireland, and the local pub, The Old Commercial has been in our family since 1824. My grandmother even owned the Downs Hotel, next door, which is now the wonderful Aldo’s restaurant.

I love to bake and cook, which is a skill that has been passed down through the generations of our family and a tradition that I happily enjoy. I can think of nothing more satisfying than creating gorgeous chocolate fudge cakes, sticky sweet desserts, dainty afternoon teas and our extensive breakfast menu.

Being gluten-free and sugar-free myself, I can happily create sweet treats and healthy options for you and am always wanting to make some comfort food for those of us with a few dietary requirements.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to stay in Margaret’s Cottage, whether it’s for one night as you walk the local coastline or a week-long trip, basing yourself here to explore the beautiful County of Down. We want you feel you can relax here whether you want to put your feet up with the daily papers, enjoy some of our delicious baking or chill-out in front of the fire with our resident cat, Mr O’Shea.

Maybe, why not do all three…we look forward to welcoming you as our guest.
